Public consultation on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics
As part of the European Green Deal, Circular Economy Action Plan and EU Plastics Strategy, the European Commission (EC) will develop a policy framework on the sourcing, labelling and use of biobased plastics, as well as the use of biodegradable and compostable plastics. To support this, the Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV) of the EC has launched a public consultation to gather insights to inform the new framework.
The consultation follows the publication of the EC’s Roadmap – Policy Framework on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics, which outlines the objective of the framework and policy areas to be addressed: (i) The sustainability of the biological feedstock used to produce biobased plastics, (ii) The effective biodegradation of biodegradable and compostable plastics and their role in a circular economy and (iii) Widespread consumer confusion.
The consultation is published on the DG ENV website and is open for feedback from 18 January to 15 March 2022. Feedback provided will be taken into account when preparing the policy framework which will be adopted in summer 2022.
